The Ice Zero FR tire

A brand new design

If the Pirelli Ice Zero Asimmetrico is replacing the Ice Zero FR, it is mostly because it fits in the same category: a non-studded winter tire.

Amongst other things, it will be offered in dimensions that are practically identical as the Ice Zero FR, ranging from 15- to 20- inches, including 10 dimensions of 17- and 18- inch tires. All in all the Ice Zero Asimmetrico tire will be offered in 31 dimensions. It will be perfectly suited to several touring vehicle and SUVs.

However, while the Ice Zero FR was a directional tire, the new Ice Zero Asimmetrico has a completely redesigned tread. Like its name indicates, it is a tire with an asymmetrical tread.

It offers a design that we often see on performance tires, and for good reason: it is extremely stable –especially at high speeds- and offers efficient water evacuation. The void ratio is also better, which brings with it certain advantages.

Amongst its newest features, you will also find:

  • New 3D sipes
  • A double lateral groove
  • Square blocs
  • New liquid polymers

All of these new elements have been brought forth in order to optimize the performance it offers as a winter tire.

Superior performance on ice

One of the main advantages of the new tire compared to the previous one, is the optimized performance it offers on ice. The Ice Zero FR was already ahead of many of its competitors, but the Asimmetrico is even better!

This can be explained by several things. Firstly, its low void ratio creates a greater surface of contact, meaning the tire grips the road better, especially when icy. Secondly, the new shoulder blocks are elongated, which also provides more stability.

In the new design, you will notice a large inner groove, which also works towards optimizing traction on ice.

The new polymers used in the rubber compound also help with added flexibility, which means that the tire maintains more traction on slippery surfaces like water and ice. More flexibility also means that it adapts much better to extreme temperatures! This, amongst other things, also contributes to the tire’s great durability.

When compared with three of its rivals, the new tire fared much better than two out of the three in icy conditions. For safe driving without studs, the Pirelli winter tire is an excellent choice.

Outstanding on snow

The Ice Zero FR was already greater than its competitors when it comes to performance on snow, and the new Asimmetrico model takes this even further. Its double lateral groove allows for pressure on the road to be evenly spread out, which means you can drive in snowy conditions in full confidence.

Beveled edges have also been added to the central block for excellent stability in the snow. When compared with its competitors in snowy conditions, it came out similar to one of them, but better than the two others.

With this brand new model, you will no longer cringe when you see a snowbank, nor when you’re coming out of your parallel parking spot!

Even more quiet

While tires with a directional tread design are known to be slightly noisier, a quiet driving experience is a clear advantage offered by asymmetrical tires. This is very true when it comes to the Pirelli Ice Zero Asimmetrico.

When tested against the previous Ice Zero FR model, it reduced noise by 4% compared to its predecessor. Winter tires have a tendency to make more noise, so this newest model is sure to please drivers who consider this a priority!

Performant on dry and wet roads

Even if the very first thing we think of when we think of winter is ice and snow, Canadian winters also have several other types of road conditions. Most of the time you will find yourself on wet or dry roads: this means that you must also take this into account when looking for a tire.

Wet roads are an integral part of our winter and spring road conditions. Once more, when facing its competitors and its predecessor, the Pirelli Ice Zero Asimmetrico has proven superior to all other tires of its category, in this type of road condition!

As mentioned above, new polymers make it increasingly flexible for added performance on slippery surfaces. The double lateral groove also contributes to improving stability on wet roads.

No matter what surface you are driving on, you can rely on the efficiency of the new 3D sipes. They grip onto the surface for faster and safer braking.
