As we tell you every week or so, the technology that goes into making new tire models is constantly improving. It seems that all tire manufacturers are working hard to solve various everyday problems! This time, the news comes from Bridgestone in association with the chemical company Dow and it could revolutionize everyday driving.

Indeed, at the Silicone Expo 2022 in Detroit earlier this week, the two companies revealed their ingenious solution against flat tires. Called B-SEALS, the silicone-based material could help increase the longevity and sealing of tires even when they have a flat. It’s not an airless tire like the other companies, but it’s just about the same result!

Self-sealing capabilities

What makes B-SEALS rather interesting is its ability to repair itself when damaged. As Bridgestone reminds us, in the United States, nearly one-third of passenger vehicles do not have a spare tire. We can imagine that the proportion here is similar and it is a real problem! After all, what can you do when you get a flat tire on an isolated road with no reception if you don’t even have a spare tire…

That’s when B-SEALS comes into play, a product that is easy to remove when needed, but provides a reasonable seal in case of a leak. Ideal for getting to the nearest garage, it won’t interfere with the technicians’ repair like other such products like sealant foam or patches might. With this new technology, Bridgestone hopes to improve the stock equipment of several models by making them more efficient and lighter.

“Extension,” “Ecology” and “Ease”

These benefits are especially important for electric vehicles since rolling resistance and weight are important factors in their range. Bridgestone sees B-SEALS technology as a way to accomplish their goal of carbon neutrality and 100% renewable materials by 2050. That’s a rather noble goal isn’t it? According to the company’s vision, the future of sustainable mobility lies in tires, both by improving their composition and increasing their life span.

After all, the tire manufacturer has established the E8 commitment consisting of eight words beginning with the letter “E”. Here, the technology meets the values of “Extension”, “Ecology” and “Ease”. In addition, the silicone sealant is completely recyclable. That’s not very surprising coming from the company that produces the Ecopia range of tires!
