Just weeks ago, we celebrated the 90th anniversary of winter tires, a milestone that underscores their importance in keeping us safe on icy roads. It’s worth remembering that Nokian, a Finnish company, introduced the first winter tire in 1934 to tackle the brutal Scandinavian winters. Over the decades, winter tire technology has evolved, with advancements such as studs, optimized rubber compounds, and designs tailored for various budgets and driving styles. Today, winter tires are an essential part of life in cold climates, ensuring safety and reliability even in the harshest conditions.
The Summer Heatwave’s Toll on Tires
Summer 2024 brought record-breaking heatwaves to my home province of Quebec, with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees. Such extreme heat doesn’t just affect people; it takes a toll on our tires too. High temperatures cause the air in tires to expand, increasing pressure and potentially leading to punctures. Friction from prolonged drives on scorching roads compounds the problem, softening the rubber and making it more susceptible to wear. This summer reminded us of the importance of regular tire maintenance, from checking pressure and tread to inspecting for damage!
A Test Drive in BC: The 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe
One of my standout experiences this year was test-driving the fifth-generation Hyundai Santa Fe in beautiful British Columbia. With its bold new design and improved features, this SUV shattered my expectations. The boxy silhouette evokes comparisons to iconic models like the Land Rover Defender, while the spacious interior boasts modern touches such as a 12.3-inch curved infotainment screen and dual wireless charging. On the road, the Santa Fe impressed with its comfortable suspension, capable engine, and decent performance.
