I have to admit, before I got into the world of tires a bit, I didn’t know Mickey Thompson. I had heard his name a few times, but nothing more. Then I dwelled on his story. Watch out, he’s a legend!
The man is passionate about speed. From an early age, he promises to break every speed records he sees. His engineering skills allow him to design car models that will help him realize his dream. He notably designed “funny cars” which won 164 victories in one year… and out of 172 starts!
The fastest man on earth
In 1958, Mickey was ready to become the fastest man in the world … but tire manufacturers were hesitant to build a tire capable of traveling at over 400 mph. Mickey and brilliant tire engineer Gene McMannis started their own tire business, which has become a leader in the racing and all-terrain tire industry. In 1960, Mickey Thompson became the fastest man on earth traveling at 406.6 mph.
Over the years, they have continued their tire development, offering spectacular all-terrain BAJA tires, as well as racing and road tires. In fact, its technology worked so well that its tires were also at the heart of the Desert Storm War, fitted to US Army vehicles.
