You may already be familiar with Fast Wheels, a local manufacturer of wheels and rims. To be totally honest with you, I'd never heard of their products, but it seems like we could all benefit from knowing more about them! We rarely talk about original parts manufacturers like Fast Wheels and its parent company Fastco Canada. But the recent launch of the EV06 wheel at the Salon du véhicule électrique de Montréal shows that there's more to learn than you might think.
Built for aerodynamics
This long-awaited product launch is a perfect opportunity to better understand the effect of a quality rim on driving performance. The new EV06 model, for example, offers a more pleasant experience and optimizes aerodynamics, a very important factor in EV efficiency. Rim design can easily increase rolling resistance, which is why the EV06 has been manufactured with Flow-Form technology, which reduces rim weight as much as it improves aerodynamics. The technology also enables the rim to bear more weight, another important issue for electric vehicles whose battery represents a considerable mass.
Even the materials used in manufacture have been rethought, notably with the inclusion in the outer layer of an extremely resistant yet very light ABS polymer. The result is a wheel capable of withstanding road shocks while reducing its impact on aerodynamics. The company hopes to ease the transition to zero-emission vehicles with its product, which, it should be remembered, was originally designed for Project Arrow, a 100% Canadian zero-emission concept vehicle.
On a Tesla near you...
IF you'd like to get your hands on one, you should know that Fast Wheels EV06s are available in just one size at the moment: 19 inches. Coincidentally (or not), this is also the wheel size of the Tesla Model 3, the latest version of which will leave the factory equipped with Canadian rims. However, the manufacturer intends to expand its range by autumn, with the introduction of 18" and 20" wheels. The product will therefore be suitable for a large number of electric vehicles, whatever their size.
