Some manufacturers are true visionaries. But sometimes a little too much … One can certainly wonder if GoodYear has not been a little too far with its concept tire called Aero and intended …. for flying cars, nothing less.

The idea of GoodYear is simple: design a tire that would be both a traditional tire, and a propeller, to propel it in the air. Of course, this is a prototype from the brain of a particularly inventive engineer. The ultimate goal of the Aero tire: reduce congestion, and start a social debate. He certainly piqued curiosity anyway!

The Aero tire is still well thought out. It has many features that are otherwise unknown.

Multimodal design:

The AERO is a multimodal concept with rotor tilting. In a few words, it simply means that it is multifunctional, and perfectly steerable in all directions to serve as a propeller. It would be, literally, the equivalent of the propulsion system of the flying car. With efficient vehicles, the AERO would give future commuters the freedom to move smoothly from road to heaven.

Non pneumatic structure:

to fulfill its role, the Aero is airless, but resistant. It offers semi-rigid spokes, which can support the weight of the vehicle and serve as propulsion blades. It is therefore thought to offer enough resistance to ride, but light enough to fly.

Magnetic Propulsion:

The AERO concept would use magnetic force to provide frictionless propulsion. This would allow the high rotational speeds required to drive the vehicle on the ground and, when the wheel is tilted, to lift a vehicle in the air and propel it forward. But hey … .. it’s still a concept!

Optical Detection:

The AERO would use light-based fiber optic sensors to monitor road conditions and tire wear. A principle that we know well, but that may explode the cost of production.

Artificial Intelligence:

In other words, it is the tire that modifies the flight plan if necessary, while transmitting the information to other vehicles.

The Aero tire is only conceptual. But beware, Goodyear is currently developing some of its technologies, such as a non-pneumatic structure and smart tire capabilities, while others could serve as a basis for new ideas and products in the future.
