Heatwaves and your tires: watch out!

Across the country, including my home province of Quebec, we experienced a surprising spring heat wave at the end of May. Drivers who weren't ready for the arrival of summer quickly saw the warm season coming, much faster than expected. It's not for nothing that there are laws across the country regulating the use of winter and summer tires! Regardless of whether they're all-season or specifically designed for the summer period, it's imperative to have appropriate tires once the temperature rises above 10 degrees. Here's what can happen if you forget...

Faster wear

The most convincing argument is probably that of money. You might think it's cheaper to keep your winter tires on all year round, but appearances are deceptive. Since warm temperatures make tire rubber softer, you need a tire designed specifically to hold up in summer. Otherwise, the soft rubber is easily worn out, and the tire will soon have to be replaced.

Reduced braking power

Another argument that may well convince the most stubborn: safety! According to CAA Québec, a vehicle travelling at 100 km/h on wet pavement at 20 degrees Celsius will take almost 20 metres longer to brake if fitted with winter tires. Imagine the difference during heat waves approaching twice that temperature!

Less grip

It's not just braking that is affected by softer rubber. As each model is manufactured to be used within a precise temperature range, their effectiveness in biting the road is also affected if they are used inefficiently. Offering less road holding, this also affects their cornering performance, which is particularly dangerous.

More noise, more fuel

Compared to safety, this may seem trivial, but let's face it, it's often the comfort issues that bother us most on a daily basis! Keeping winter tires on in summer, apart from the wear and tear, is also a questionable economic decision when it comes to the bill at the pump. The rolling resistance of winter tires is greatly increased in hot weather, which not only causes more noise and vibration, but also boosts fuel consumption. You've been warned!

If you're reading our blog, chances are you're already a fan of summer tires, but it's never too late for a little reminder. If you're still not, head straight to Blackcircles.ca and buy yourself a model like the Continental Purecontact LS or the BFGoodrich Advantage Control. You won't even have to leave home...
