Michelin believes in development in Canada. And it also believes in the efforts to reduce its environmental footprint. That’s why it announced that it will invest, in collaboration with the federal government, $300 million in its Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, facility, creating dozens of jobs in the process.
The direct investment in the plant will be $140 million, with additional funding from Canada’s Strategic Innovation Fund. The funds will also be used to reduce emissions from the company’s operations in the province through electrification.
According to Alexis Garcin, president and CEO of Michelin North America, the investment will create approximately 70 new jobs at the Bridgewater plant. The goal is to develop a tire manufacturing line for electric vehicles in Nova Scotia.
Some of the money will also go to Michelin’s Pictou and Waterville plants. The demand for electric vehicle tires is growing and so is the way they are made. We need to be able to design them to meet performance requirements while having less impact on range. The installation of new technologies and equipment at Michelin’s three production facilities will help to achieve this.
The company has been manufacturing tires in the province since 1971 and employs about 3,600 people in Nova Scotia.
