It can be tempting to turn to less expensive solutions, such as online private sales… but at what price?
Whether you browse one of the sites dedicated to classified ads like Kijiji or your favorite social network, such as Facebook and its Marketplace, you will surely see an incredible deal for tires. Not all of them will be as dubious as the one featured on this blog (by the way, if your French is not good enough to understand it, don’t worry, mine isn’t either). However, all of them share these important drawbacks!
Uncertain storage conditions
This problem is not only with private sales, but also with used tires in general. It is difficult to know exactly what conditions the product has been stored in since its manufacture, a major factor in its effectiveness. Tires that have been stored in improper temperatures or, even worse, outdoors will be much more fragile and less grippy. If you purchase your used tires from a reputable source, however, these risks can be minimized by expert inspection.
Used tires with a questionable history
In addition to storage conditions, there are many other factors that can make a tire more susceptible to punctures. For example, has it been involved in an accident or has the owner ever driven with a flat? It’s hard to say, especially when you buy it directly from the owner. Unfortunately, there is no system like VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) for tires yet!
Lack of verification
No matter who you buy your used tires from, you are putting your safety in the hands of those who sold them to you. While it’s possible to do so prudently with a reputable dealer, it’s much rarer to find a trustworthy individual. And this is not because of bad intentions! Rather, it is that the average person does not have the knowledge of a mechanical expert who will be able to properly assess the condition of the tires.
In any case, why take the risk? Buying quality tires when they are new can be similar or even better in the long run. Store them in stable conditions and they will probably last longer!
