Sports cars have always been fashionable and it’s easy to see why! Their dynamic curves, their ever more powerful engines and their loud roar make them popular with the general public. Even more powerful than the sporty models that are commonly found on our roads, there are the famous supercars.
No, we’re not talking about Superman’s car, but about performance beasts that outperform all others on the track. You probably know many of them: Ferrari Enzo, Porsche 911 GT1 and so on. But have you ever been interested in their tires?
McLaren 720S: Pirelli P Zero Corsa MC
The collaboration between Pirelli and McLaren has been going on for more than 10 years now and it doesn’t seem to stop anytime soon. In 2017, a new generation of McLaren supercars was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show: the McLaren 720S. With it also came a new generation of Pirelli tires, the P ZERO Corsa MC. The MC is to indicate that these are customized tires for the McLaren!
The P Zero Corsa Asimmetrico 2 available on BlackCircles.ca is obviously not the MC type, but it has many of the same advantages. It is ultra-quiet thanks to the Pirelli Noise Cancelling System and offers similar grip and handling. But I guess it’s not the kind of tire that everyone needs! In the same range, the P Zero All Season Plus offers the same kind of performance, but in a more accessible format.
Ferrari 458 Speciale: Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 ZP
The famous Italian manufacturer has partnered with Michelin and several other teams to develop a very high performance tire, the Pilot Sport Cup 2 ZP. As the name suggests, they were created specifically for racing and that’s pretty obvious. With dual compound technology and a custom tread pattern, they are capable of delivering speed gains in both wet and dry conditions.
For reliable, all-season sport performance (except in Quebec winters), the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 is also a good choice. Their more affordable price doesn’t mean anything about their quality, though, as they remain one of the brand’s most fun-to-drive choices.
Mercedes-AMG Project ONE: Continental
I can already hear the most observant among you tellement me, “but, the Mercedes in the picture is wearing Michelin tires!” You’re right, but that’s because the German company was also involved in the creation of the Sport Cup! Usually, at Mercedes-Benz, Continental is the brand of choice. BMW also shares this preference. In fact, both usually opt for customized versions of the well-known Continental tire models.
For sportier cars, the Continental Sport Contact 6 comes to mind, which keeps its stability up to 350 km/h. Unless you’re a driver, I strongly recommend not trying this at home! On standard high-end passenger vehicles, you will find more Continental Procontact, favored for their comfort and traction.
I am aware that very few of us will ever buy such tires, but I am sure you will agree: it feels good to dream a little!
