Ah, changing tires! Whether it’s because of a flat tire or a change of season, it’s a real chore for many motorists, whether they do it themselves or have their mechanic do it for them. Blackcircles Canada gives you some tips on when to change your tires.
In the spring and fall, we change our tires!
Since 2008, Quebec motorists have been required to put winter tires on their vehicles; from December 15 at the beginning, this date has been brought forward to December 1 in 2019. However, you don’t have to wait until the deadline to put on your winter tires! By making an appointment earlier (in November or even late October), you will not only avoid the rush of motorists who wait until the last minute, but you will also be prepared in case of an early storm… and we know that in our latitudes, a snowfall in early November is not unusual!

The law also says that you must keep your winter tires on until March 15. But just as you don’t have to wait until the last day to install your winter tires, there’s no need to wait in line at your garage on March 16 to have your 4-season or summer tires installed! In fact, it’s not uncommon for Mother Nature to give us an extra layer of snow after April Fools’ Day!
I only need to change one tire; is it possible?

If you have a flat tire, it is possible to replace only the flat tire, under certain conditions. You will have to replace it with a tire with the same characteristics and brand, so that it has a similar structure to the other 3. If, for economical reasons, you use an unsuitable tire, you will lose in handling and also accelerate wear. However, you will only be able to change the broken tire if you have a 2-wheel drive vehicle; in the case of a 4×4 model, the other 3 tires will also have to be replaced, even if they are almost not worn out.
You can change only 2 tires on 2-wheel drive models, but make sure to mount them in the rear for extra traction. However, be sure to have your vehicle inspected, as 2 worn wheels can be a sign of poor alignment.
Changing a tire without going to the garage
If you’re skilled enough—and have the right tools at hand—you could change your tires yourself, if you have 4-season or winter tires mounted on rims, or if you have a flat tire. And if this is your first experience, here’s how to change a car tire yourself.
-
Turn off the engine
It may seem trivial, but it’s essential! Also make sure that the parking brake is on and that your vehicle is level.
-
Block the wheels
To prevent the vehicle from moving, it is important to properly block the wheels (except the one to be replaced), with shims provided for this purpose, which you can obtain in the automotive departments of big-box stores.
-
Loosen the nuts
Using an articulated wrench, loosen the nuts of the wheel to be replaced one by one.
-
Position your jack correctly
It is best to avoid injury or damage to the vehicle, so make sure the jack is properly positioned; if necessary, consult the owner’s manual before lifting the vehicle.
-
Remove the nuts and the wheel
Once the wheel is removed, make sure the contact surfaces are free of dirt or debris before installing the new wheel.

-
Insert the new wheel.
Also hand tighten the nuts and remove the jack. Then tighten the nuts firmly with a torque wrench.
