Tires in fall and how to take care of them

Is it really the end of September already? It seems like only yesterday it was still warm, and now autumn is officially with us. There are no tires specifically designed for autumn, of course, but the arrival of cold weather can be a game-changer. Fortunately, there are a few simple tips that will help you take good care of your tires in fall and spend the next few months safely on the road.

Consider your circumstances

Do you live in the north of the country, where the snow starts as soon as summer ends? Are you closer to the U.S. border, where winter can be a long time coming? Do you drive in the city or the country? All these variables can drastically change the appropriate measures for taking care of your tires. If you drive mainly in rural or colder areas, it's worth taking extra care during the autumn, for example by fitting winter tires earlier than usual.

Check your tires

Tires should be inspected at least once a month, but let's be honest, I doubt most of you are that careful. Autumn can therefore be the ideal season to make sure your summer tires are inspected before storing them for months on end. There'll be no surprises when it's time to install them again next spring! Be sure to check the rim and tread of each tire, noting the thickness of the tread in the process.

Keep up with the pressure

When the mercury drops, so does the air pressure in your tires! If you're going to keep your summer tires on through the fall, make sure you've got the right tube pressure. A well-inflated tire is even more resistant to wear, and offers optimum handling and traction!

Prepare for winter

Even if you're not planning to change your tires right away, it's a good idea to start thinking about winter a few months before it arrives. You can take the time, for example, to book your tire-change appointment in advance, or make sure you have space to store your summer tires. Who knows, maybe you'll realize you've been needing new winter tires all this time?

Drive carefully

This tip is always a good idea, but it's even more important during periods of change, such as autumn. Variable temperatures and more frequent precipitation can accentuate the risks on the road. Adjusting your driving style not only reduces tire wear, but also the risk of accidents or, worse still, injury!
