Did you think our journey across the country was already over? Well, you might have forgotten that Canada is made up of more than just its ten provinces. North of British Columbia, you can now head to the Yukon, the first of the two Canadian territories we still have to visit.
I apologize in advance for the omission of Nunavut, but the lack of roads makes the place a little less convenient for a road-trip… Even without having been there, after completing this last step, I think you will have the right to say that you know your Canada!
Discovering the Yukon in Whitehorse
To start our trip, let’s first visit the Yukon capital region and its many outdoor activities. Only 25 minutes from downtown, we invite you to visit the Yukon Wildlife Reserve. It is a perfect site to improve your knowledge of the wildlife of our country on its five kilometers of trail.
To relax, only a few dozen kilometers from Whitehorse, you can bathe in the two mineral water pools of the Takhini Springs. In the evening, what better way to enjoy the local cuisine than with salmon? It’s the specialty at Klondike Rib & Salmon, one of the best restaurants in town!
We are not yet at the northernmost point of our road-trip and already the roads are getting rougher. Have you thought about getting winter tires before you leave? The Michelin X-ICE Snow, for example, is an ideal choice because of its shorter braking distance on ice and its low rolling resistance.
On the road in Watson Lake
Before we get to the next territory on our list, there’s a lot of driving to do! The Watson Lake area is a great place to stop before arriving in Yellowknife. Right in the heart of the town, you’ll find a somewhat unusual attraction: a forest of over 77,000 signs!
It’s also a great place to see the Northern Lights, with interactive exhibits explaining the folklore and science behind the phenomenon. Nearby, at Rancheria Falls, a short walk is all it takes to see waterfalls and sometimes even caribou.
Experience the North in Yellowknife
Here you are at the (real) final destination of our journey: the capital of the Northwest Territories. Contrary to what one might think because of its geographical location, it is a warm and lively city! In summer as well as in winter, its different festivals like SnowKing and the traditional funfair transform the old town into a party place. If you haven’t had enough of nature, Cameron Falls is about 50 km from the city. It is probably one of the most spectacular landscapes in the country!
Back in Yellowknife, you’ll surely deserve a good meal. The perfect place to enjoy fish and chips is the Black Knight, a Scottish-style pub. Pair it with a cold beer for even more fun!
This is the northernmost point of this great Blackcircles.ca road trip. More than ever, it is imperative to have tires that hold up! There, temperatures can regularly reach -40C. This kind of conditions does not scare the Pirelli Winter Ice Zero FR. When it comes to driving at such a latitude, there is no question of making compromises.
After tens of thousands of kilometers, it’s finally time to go home. You’ve officially seen the whole of Canada, or at least what can be done in one trip!
